TPE Shore 50A (flame retardant)

Kraiburg · Thermolast K TC5FTZ (FR2)

A flame-retardant thermoplastic elastomer with a Shore hardness of 50 A – about as yielding as an eraser. The combination of elasticity and flame retardancy is rare in 3D printing; for the FR2 series Kraiburg additionally declares fire classes to the railway standard EN 45545-2.

These values are taken from the manufacturer datasheet and apply to the material, not to the printed part. In 3D printing the achievable properties depend on part orientation, layer height and process parameters – in the Z direction in particular they are lower. Please talk to us before relying on them for design.

“Qualified for functional parts” is a general classification. A functional part can be a simple clip or a main load-bearing member – the forces and load cases differ fundamentally. We therefore always assess in each individual case whether a material is suitable for your part.

Strengths

  • Meets the railway standard DIN EN 45545-2 in R22 HL2, R23 HL3 and R26 – low toxicity and smoke density
  • UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm while halogen-free to IEC 61249-2-21, with no burning drips
  • Very high elongation at break of 650 % with only 15 % compression set after 72 h – lastingly resilient
  • Bonds to polypropylene – hard/soft assemblies without a bonding agent
  • Silicone-free – no risk to later painting or bonding steps

Limitations

  • Temperature stability only up to 85 °C
  • Compression set rises to 65 % at 70 °C – unsuitable for permanently warm seals
  • Kraiburg prohibits safety-relevant applications without prior written consent
  • Not suitable for load-bearing or dimensionally critical parts
  • Markedly slower printing, tendency to stringing
