PP-T (talc-filled)

Talc-filled polypropylene is a commodity material in injection moulding, yet barely established in 3D printing. Compared with glass-fibre reinforced PP it warps considerably less and is not abrasive – which makes it attractive for large, flat parts. We are currently trialling it.

This material is still under evaluation at our site

We have it in house and are working towards process release, but it is not yet qualified. We therefore cannot commit to it for series parts. If it suits your application, talk to us – we will tell you openly where we stand, and we can use it as part of a trial.

Rated 1 to 5 relative to the other materials in our range. This is an experience-based orientation aid, not a measured value – the hard numbers are in the table below.

Technical data

PropertyValueSource
Material classPolypropylene, talc filledgrade designation

These values are taken from the manufacturer datasheet and apply to the material, not to the printed part. In 3D printing the achievable properties depend on part orientation, layer height and process parameters – in the Z direction in particular they are lower. Please talk to us before relying on them for design.

Strengths

  • Considerably less warping than glass-fibre reinforced PP – attractive for large areas
  • Talc is not abrasive and is gentle on nozzle and screw
  • Stiffer and more dimensionally stable than unfilled PP
  • An economical material with good availability

Limitations

  • Not yet qualified here – properties on the printed part are still outstanding
  • Lower strength than the glass-fibre reinforced grades
  • Limited temperature resistance, as with all polypropylenes
  • Poor paintability and bondability without pre-treatment
