POM-C (Hostaform)

Celanese · Hostaform C 13021

Hostaform C 13021 is a polyoxymethylene copolymer. POM-C is chemically more robust than the homopolymer, particularly against alkalis and hot water, and is the standard material for moving precision parts.

Limited processability

We can process this material – for prototypes, visual and design samples and lightly loaded parts. It is currently not qualified at our site for load-bearing functional parts. We are working on solutions to increase the strength and load-bearing capacity of printed parts made from this material in the future. Talk to us – we assess your part individually.

These values are taken from the manufacturer datasheet and apply to the material, not to the printed part. In 3D printing the achievable properties depend on part orientation, layer height and process parameters – in the Z direction in particular they are lower. Please talk to us before relying on them for design.

“Qualified for functional parts” is a general classification. A functional part can be a simple clip or a main load-bearing member – the forces and load cases differ fundamentally. We therefore always assess in each individual case whether a material is suitable for your part.

Strengths

  • Food-contact compliant to FDA 21 CFR 177.2470 and EU 10/2011
  • Approved at BMW, Bosch, Continental, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Renault
  • Excellent dimensional stability, very low moisture uptake (0.65 %)
  • Very tough: 200 kJ/m² unnotched impact strength (Charpy, 23 °C)
  • Low friction, good wear behaviour, machines very well

Limitations

  • Layer adhesion is the central challenge when printing
  • Decomposition on overheating releases formaldehyde – extraction mandatory
  • High coefficient of thermal expansion of 110 · 10⁻⁶ /K – prone to warping
  • Not resistant to strong acids
  • Barely bondable without pre-treatment
