ECTFE

ECTFE – ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene – is a fluoropolymer that holds up even where PVDF reaches its limits: against strong alkalis and high chlorine concentrations. For us it is the obvious extension of our fluoropolymer portfolio. Initial trials are running; it is not yet released for series parts.

This material is still under evaluation at our site

We have it in house and are working towards process release, but it is not yet qualified. We therefore cannot commit to it for series parts. If it suits your application, talk to us – we will tell you openly where we stand, and we can use it as part of a trial.

Technical data

Material classFluoropolymer (ECTFE)grade designation

These values are taken from the manufacturer datasheet and apply to the material, not to the printed part. In 3D printing the achievable properties depend on part orientation, layer height and process parameters – in the Z direction in particular they are lower. Please talk to us before relying on them for design.

Strengths

  • Resistant to strong alkalis that attack PVDF
  • Very good resistance to chlorine and oxidising media
  • High impact strength even at low temperatures
  • Low permeation – of interest for linings and barrier layers

Limitations

  • Not yet qualified here – the process window and achievable layer adhesion are still open
  • Like all fluoropolymers critical when overheated; extraction is mandatory
  • Lower stiffness than the reinforced engineering plastics
  • Sourcing and price are well above standard materials
